The state of Alabama is bordered by Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico to the south, and Mississippi to the west. It is the 30th largest state by area, and the 24th most populous state, with a population of around 5 million people.
Alabama is known as the “Heart of Dixie,” the “Cotton State,” and the “Yellowhammer State,” after its state bird, the Yellowhammer. Its largest city is Huntsville, and its oldest city is Mobile, founded in 1702 as the French capital of Louisiana by French colonists.
Historically, Alabama was a large producer of cotton. Today its economy has diversified and includes automotive, finance, tourism, manufacturing, aerospace, mineral extraction, and more, and rural interests still endure.
The state is diverse in topography. It contains the rich agricultural valley of the Tennessee River in the extreme north, and broken fragments of the Appalachian Mountains in the northeast. Below there is a band of prairie called the Black Belt, with incredibly rich soils that once produced much of the state’s cotton. And further south there are piney woods and coastal plains, until you reach the mossy live oaks and white beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a wonderful place!
